Avalon xDSL Deployment
Avalon has been conducting xDSL tests since the fall of '97. We are continuing this trial because
we feel there are new products coming out that will address some of our future needs. Despite this,
our trial demonstrated that there are a number of excellent xDSL products available now, and
that a successful deployment was possible.
For our deployment, we chose the PairGain MegabitModem CRA.
This was the only product to meet our criteria which were:
- Range of at least 15K feet
- Bridging with at least a 1024 mac address table
- Ability to route IP
- Simple straightforward setup
We are using the 220 style Megabit Modem CRA at our central office. We have lines deployed to business customers,
residential customers, and as trunks to apartment complexes. At this point in our deployment, we have not
encountered any significant problems. The PairGain hardware has maintained it's near perfect reliability that
we observed during our trial.
